The best things to do in Canada

From the bustling metropolis of Toronto to the gentler scenes of the town of Banff, Canada offers excitement aplenty. As the world's second largest country, the diversity on offer in each of the 10 provinces and three territories never fails to impress travellers.

Home to dramatic peaks, numerous national parks, and some of the world's most expansive bodies of water, there is no shortage of outdoorsy things to do in Canada. It's not all natural landscapes, though. The cities here are cultural melting pots filled with world-class attractions and all the history, vibrancy and delectable dining you can dream of. Whether you want to explore the many iconic landmarks or go a little more off the beaten track, Canada has it all. What's more, as a country famed for its stunning landscapes, even a city break means you are never too far from incredible nature.

Not sure where to start? Here's our guide to the best things to do in Canada in the country's most popular cities and towns.

Calgary

When it comes to things to do in Calgary, Canada's 'Cowtown' has plenty to offer. While it is best known for being the gateway to Alberta's cowboy culture, the city is a vibrant metropolis brimming with trendy restaurants and bars, with downtown Calgary currently undergoing a large-scale facelift to the tune of nearly one billion dollars.

Calgary Tower - Take the lift to the top of this 191-metre observation tower for 360-degree views over the city, complete with a glass floor for the bravest of visitors. Undoubtedly the most iconic construction of the city's skyline, the tower is also home to a revolving restaurant and theatre room.

Calgary Stampede - This annual event takes place every July and is an unabashed celebration of all things rodeo. The 10-day festival features live music, parades, stage shows and races, and sees the whole city come alive with an infectious party atmosphere.

Fort Calgary - This reconstruction of the original 19th-century fort houses an interpretive centre and museum, built on the site where the city was founded.

Heritage Park Historical Village - Visit this 127-acre museum park and see the past brought to life with a replica town, antique steam train and paddlewheel ship, as well as farm animals, vintage cars and interactive exhibits.

Montreal

If you're looking for things to do in Montreal, Canada's most elegant bilingual city has plenty to fill your itinerary. The largest city in the province of Québec, Montreal is a haven for lovers of art and culture, and is also home to a fantastic culinary scene. It boasts a number of different neighbourhoods, each with their own unique charm, including the cobbled and historic Old Town and the trendy Plateau area.

Notre Dame Basilica - A true gem of Gothic Revival architecture, this beautiful church dating from the 1820s boasts intricate wood carvings, stained glass windows and gold-leaf decoration and was designed to welcome up to 8,000 worshippers.

Montreal Botanical Garden -  Green-fingered travellers won't want to miss a visit to this epic garden, renowned as one of the world's finest in addition to being one of the largest. Highlights across the 190 acres include the Chinese Garden, Japanese Garden and First Nation Garden.

Underground City - The ideal escape from the summer heat or winter cold, this huge shopping plaza has everything you need to shop 'til you drop, as well as a plethora of dining options.

Vieux-Port de Montréal - This historic port area is the perfect place to enjoy a stroll while taking advantage of the wide range of dining and entertainment options, ranging from the giant Ferris wheel to the Science Centre.

Set inside the Canadian Rockies, the town is a gateway to the peaks, lakes and valleys of the surrounding Jasper National Park, and also offers some of the most extraordinary scenery in the country. Here is our pick of things to do in Jasper, Canada's mountain-backed town.

Jasper Skytram - Ride the highest aerial tramway in Canada and enjoy spectacular views from the top of Whistlers Mountain, some 2,263 metres above sea level.

Banff

Nestled inside the breathtaking Banff National Park, the town of Banff has long been a popular destination for those travelling to Canada, and with good reason. Natural sights like Lake Moraine Lake and the Rocky Mountains are nearby, and the town itself is a charming mix of traditional-style buildings and stunning landscapes. There's even the chance to see the elusive Northern Lights during the winter months.

Helicopter Flight - Undoubtedly one of the most memorable things to do in Banff, Canada's Rockies can be seen from the air on a helicopter flight, with trips lasting 30 to 60 minutes.

Quebec

As one of the country's oldest cities, Québec City offers a fantastic array of historical sights and attractions. Even if you are not a fan of history, the city's quaint streets and charming boutiques and coffee shops are sure to draw you in.

Citadelle - Built by British forces in the 1820s, this imposing fortress is still an active military base but welcomes visitors to explore the city's history as well as to witness a musical performance during the summer months by the troops of the Royal 22e Régiment.

Montmorency Falls - Located only a few minutes from the centre of the city, these falls stand at 83 metres tall, making them taller than Niagara Falls. Take a cable car to see the falls from above, or simply enjoy a wander around the nearby Montmorency Falls Park.

Quartier Petit Champlain  - This shopping area may be small but its colourful, narrow streets attract visitors from far and wide to browse the traditional boutiques selling everything from handmade shoes to fudge.

Quebec Funiculaire - Step aboard this funicular that links the Vieux-Québec area to the upper part of the city. Built in 1879, it was originally powered by water but now uses electricity. The journey takes just 30 seconds, but is a great way to avoid the stairs up to the previously-mentioned Petit-Champlain quarter.

Toronto

Cosmopolitan but pleasantly green, Toronto is a lively city with a vibrant nightlife and plenty of excellent museums. The capital of Ontario is also wonderfully diverse, resulting in a varied and exciting culinary scene that includes Chinatown and Greektown. The city's Distillery District offers a wide range of cool independent shops and eateries set in a former whisky distillery.

Casa Loma - This Gothic-Revival style castle was built by a Canadian financier in 1914. Today, it is a museum, with three floors to explore as well as award-winning gardens.

Harbourfront -  This area on the banks of Lake Ontario is complete with parks, galleries, eateries, and live performances. You can also catch the ferry to Toronto Islands to enjoy its beaches and walking trails.

Cabbagetown - Take a stroll around this charming Victorian neighbourhood and visit its quirky shops, inviting restaurants and Riverdale Farm - a working farm set across 7.5 acres.

Niagara Falls- Why not enjoy a trip to this world-famous natural landmark on your visit to Toronto? Located around 90 minutes away, there are several buses travelling the route, as well as plenty of day tours provided by local tourism companies.

Victoria

As the capital of British Columbia, Victoria is home to some of the best outdoor things to do in Canada, with hiking, cycling, kayaking and fishing all accessible from the city. As a former settlement of colonial Britain, the city's history can be seen in its Victorian architecture, gardens and pubs.

Whale watching cruise - Thanks to its location in close proximity to the Haro and Juan de Fuca Straits, Victoria is a great place to spot whales including humpback, killer and grey whales, as well as other marine life such as sea lions and dolphins.

Butchart Gardens - Located a 20-minute drive from Victoria, these world-renowned gardens have a history dating back more than a century and are a National Historic Site of Canada. The 55-acre site boasts five themed gardens and a range of sculptures and fountains.

Craigdarroch Castle - Built by Scottish coal entrepreneur Robert Dunsmuir in 1887, this grand Victorian mansion would look right at home in the Scottish Highlands. Having been carefully restored, the castle offers a great insight into the lifestyle of the family that once roamed its halls.

Fisherman's Wharf Park - This is an ideal spot for a gentle stroll, with a number of shops and restaurants located along a charming floating pier, as well as the chance to spot the local seals.

Vancouver
