Since this unique trio of countries split from the Soviet Union and declared independence in the early nineties, they have grown to become a sought-after travel destination. Estonia is a Baltic gem, with incredible wilderness scenes including the wetlands of Sooma National Park, the diverse bird species of Matsalu National Park, and the stretches of coastline in Pärnu. Its capital city, Tallinn, is one for the history buffs with its UNESCO-listed Old Town and Gothic Town hall, both of which have led to the capital being regarded as the “medieval pearl of Europe”.

The Baltic nations sure know a thing or two about conjuring incredible festive cheer. The trio of capital cities put on a winter wonderland spectacular every year, hosting some of the best European Christmas markets. In the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, you can see the city’s TV Tower adorned with more than 70,000 lights every Christmas. Plus the charming Old Town comes alive with merry carols and decorated market stalls. Latvia is certainly another special place to spend a festive break, as the capital city of Riga is rumoured to be the place where the tradition of tree decorating began more than five centuries ago.
