Austria attracts visitors to its spectacular natural landscapes and enchanting cities all year round. With its scenic Alpine beauty, medieval towns and castles, and rich musical heritage, it offers no end of sightseeing opportunities to visitors. You’ll find you have plenty to do on your holiday in Austria - here are a few suggestions.
To eat out in Austria is to experience one of the country’s greatest pleasures – Austrians love their food and drink. Whether it’s a pastry from a Backerei, or a Bratwurst or Kasekrainer with "sharp or sweet" mustard from a street-corner stand, there’s never a shortage of food!
Austrian cuisine takes influences from Central European produce, textures and flavours – some dating back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire – and is invariably rich, especially when it comes to the delicious, filling soups such as Gulaschsuppe or Bohnen (bean) suppe. Sausages (wurstl) come in several varieties, often accompanied by rosti-style potatoes. Try authentic Wienerschnitzel followed by delicious Sachertort, perhaps accompanied by a beer or light, fruity Austrian wine (Austria is home to some surprisingly fine, and relatively inexpensive, vintages).
Austria also invented and perfected the coffee-house – the ideal place to rest your feet and relax with a coffee or beer, and Vienna is the city to visit for cafes. But for something more substantial, there are countless restaurants serving lunch (look out for the great-value Mittagsmenu) and dinner. Above all, though, it’s desserts and pastries for which Austrian’s are justifiably famed, and the calorie-conscious will need the strongest of wills to resist temptation.
