Food & Drink in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is home to a rich and diverse culinary scene, with influences from domestic tribes, neighbouring African countries and European settlers. The dishes here are full of flavour, but less spicy than many other African countries, thanks in large part to the preferences of British settlers during the country's colonial past.

One of the most important staples in Zimbabwean cuisine is maize, which you'll find in a wide array of dishes throughout the country. Grilled and fried meats also form an important part of the cuisine, as does freshwater fish like kapenta, which are usually sundried. The influence of British colonisation can be seen in daily staples such as bread, sugar and tea, while the popularity of peanuts in various dishes hails back to the country's Portuguese connection.

There are plenty of different and equally aromatic dishes to try on Zimbabwe holidays, whether you are a meat eater or follow a plant-based diet. Often hailed as the country's national dish, sadza is a kind of traditional porridge made with pounded corn, also known as mealie-meal. Another popular dish you will find on menus throughout Zimbabwe is dovi, a traditional stew made with peanuts, stock, and vegetables that can be eaten with or without meat, and is usually served with sadza. A must-try vegan option is muboora, pumpkin leaves cooked with oil, tomatoes and onions. One of the most loved Zimbabwean desserts is chikenduza. Also known as candy cakes, these muffin-shaped sweet treats are topped with bright pink icing.

If you're just looking for a quick bite on the go, you can taste one of the country's many popular snacks, which range from fried cakes to dried fruits. The more adventurous may like to try mopane worms - the larvae of the mopane emperor moth which are eaten fried. In terms of drinks, beer is the most prominent alcoholic beverage in Zimbabwe, with a range of regional options on offer.
