Inside our itineraries Q&A series: Costa Rica’s natural wonders
Go beyond the beach resorts and discover how to make the most of a wish-list Costa Rican holiday with expert insight from our Americas Product Manager, Sarah Beckwith.
From wildlife-rich national parks, amongst the backdrop of towering mountains and wild coastal lagoons, to the historic plantations which have influenced the country’s culture and economy, there’s so much to love about Costa Rica. What’s more, with the launch of our brand-new itinerary, departing in 2026 and beyond, it’s the ideal time to consider this Central American destination for your next getaway.
We recently sat down with our resident Americas expert, Sarah Beckwith, for a chat about the finer details and lesser-known secrets of this tropical gem. Offering some valuable insights and insider knowledge on how to best spend your escape, here’s what she had to say:
1. What is the best season for a Costa Rica tour, and what weather should customers expect?
The climate in Costa Rica varies depending on the region. The Caribbean side is much more humid and experiences significant rainfall, with November to January and May to August typically being the wettest months. On the Pacific side, the rainy season generally falls between May and October. If you're looking to travel during the driest months, February and March are usually ideal. However, on the Caribbean side, some tropical rain is always to be expected.
2. How should customers pack for the weather?
Remember that Costa Rica is a relaxed, laid-back destination, so pack mostly casual clothes along with a few nicer outfits for the evenings. Customers should bring a sturdy, comfortable pair of walking shoes or trainers and, for those concerned about their hair, a waterproof jacket with a hood is also recommended! Conditions on the east coast will be humid, so plan accordingly.
3. What are the main highlights of a tour to Costa Rica?
The main highlight of Costa Rica is undoubtedly its incredible wildlife. On our 2026 itinerary, customers will explore five national parks and one reserve, each offering unique ecosystems and a variety of species to discover. Highlights also include visits to two volcanoes, a tour of a coffee estate, and a delightful chocolate tour where visitors can indulge in some delicious samples.
4. What is the physical activity level of a Costa Rica tour?
The physical activity level for this trip can be described as moderate. There will be a fair amount of walking, including exploring the base of the Arenal Volcano and getting on and off boats in Tortuguero. As this is a trip of a lifetime, some days will be packed with activities to ensure you experience the best of Costa Rica. However, there will also be free time built into the itinerary, allowing you to choose between optional excursions or leisurely days back at the hotel.
5. What type of accommodation is provided on a Costa Rica tour?
All our accommodations are carefully selected 3- or 4-star properties. Except for your hotel in San José, all accommodations are lodge or resort-style, designed to complement the natural surroundings. They are set in stunning, lush grounds, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in Costa Rica's beautiful landscapes.
6. Are there opportunities to see wildlife?
There are countless opportunities to spot wildlife throughout your trip. In addition to the five national parks and the reserve included in your itinerary, you’ll often encounter local animals while relaxing at your hotels or even during your journeys between them. Be especially vigilant during the boat transfer to and from your lodge in Tortuguero, as this is a prime time for sightings of the region’s unique aquatic species.
7. Can customers add on unique excursions?
Yes! Customers have the option to add a variety of exciting excursions, ranging from a visit to a sloth sanctuary where they can learn about conservation and rescue efforts, to a relaxing catamaran trip on the Pacific Ocean. There’s something for everyone to enjoy!
8. What type of food can customers expect on a Costa Rica tour?
Costa Rica boasts an abundance of freshly grown produce, including a variety of exotic fruits, thanks to its tropical climate. The cuisine is characterised by simple, freshly prepared dishes. A couple of local favourites to try are rice and beans, as well as ceviche. In general, the food in Costa Rica is milder compared to some of its regional neighbours, with less emphasis on spice.
9. Is there free time for self-exploration or is the itinerary packed?
There is plenty of time built into the itinerary for self-exploration or simply relaxation. Throughout the trip, there are half days set aside, and at the end, in Manuel Antonio on days 10 and 11, you’ll have complete freedom to do whatever you like.
10. Will there be a knowledgeable guide on hand?
Yes, upon arrival, you’ll have a transfer from the airport to your hotel. Then, on Day 2, when your sightseeing begins, your allocated guide will join you and remain with you until your departure.
