Celebrity Bear Hunt – Five Costa Rican destinations you won’t want to miss
As Bear Grylls returns to screens for Netflix’s brand-new series, Celebrity Bear Hunt, we’re thinking about the Costa Rican destinations that keep us coming back for more.
Renowned survivalist Bear Grylls returns to screens this week, alongside 12 famous faces, for Netflix’s brand-new series, Celebrity Bear Hunt. While Bear hunts his A-list friends through the Costa Rican jungle, viewers will be treated to scenes of this South American gem’s most impressive locations – but why stop there?
In anticipation of the series’ debut episode, releasing Wednesday, 5 February, we’ve been hooked on all things Costa Rica and can’t stop thinking about our favourite destinations across the country. Whether your South American escape has been months in the planning, or you’re inspired by Bears’ escapades in the jungle, here are five spots you won’t want to miss on an escape to Costa Rica.
Tortuguero National Park
Water safaris promise some of the most memorable animal-spotting experiences that money can buy – and a cruise along Tortuguero National Park’s mangrove swamps and coastal lagoons is no exception! With popular turtle breeding grounds on its periphery, and crocodile-rich waters further in, you’ll never be far from your next wildlife sighting. Keep an eye on the surrounding trees and you might also catch a glimpse of the colourful birds, reptiles and amphibians that dwell in the canopy.
Monteverde Cloud Forest
Swapping the seas for the skies, Monteverde offers a completely different experience to Tortuguero. With towering cloud forests, and ingenious skybridges tracing a path through the mist-covered canopy, Monteverde brings visitors closer to the treetops than anywhere else in the country. Enjoy up-close encounters with the monkey and bird species that thrive high in the mountains, and soak up panoramic views over Costa Rica’s most memorable vistas.
Poas and Arenal Volcanoes
Ok, maybe we’re bending the rules a little by including two destinations under one heading, but we simply couldn’t include one without the other! Home to fewer animals than the jungle, the craters and cones of Poas and Arenal volcanoes showcase some of country’s most impressive rock features and vivid natural landscapes. Marvel at Poas’ colourful turquoise calderas, visit the fertile plantations that line its slopes, or rest for a while in Arenal’s rejuvenating natural hot springs – when it comes to enjoying the best of these two regions, the choice is yours.
San José
The charming capital city of Costa Rica, San José is a far cry from the wildlife-rich stretches that dot the surrounding countryside. With bustling street markets, home to a wide array of artisan stalls, and impressive 19th-century architecture, the city retains all the charm and character of its Spanish colonial roots. While here, be sure to stop at the grand Plaza de la Cultura, or perhaps unwind with time in La Sabana Metropolitan Park, affectionately known as the green ‘Lungs of San José’ by locals.
Manuel Antonio
Over to the Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast now, and the lively town of Manuel Antonio promises the ideal blend between coastal relaxation, with its pristine waters and white-sand beaches, and fascinating animal-spotting by both land and sea. Spot the world’s most elusive creatures with a guided bushwalk through Manuel Antonio National Park, explore the world beneath the waves with a scuba dive amongst the region’s colourful coral reefs and soak up culture of this laid-back coastal gem.
