Whether you’re a casual animal-lover or a seasoned naturalist, get safari-ready with this quick and simple guide to your next wildlife-spotting adventure!

When it comes to unforgettable wish-list travel, few getaways compare to a traditional safari across Africa’s untamed natural spaces. From ‘Big Five’ sightings in the bushveld, and stops at some truly remarkable private reserves, to engaging cultural highlights, there’s a whole host of lifelong memories to be made across these unmissable tours. That being said, we appreciate that venturing into the wild can be a daunting prospect for a lot of first timers!

Not to worry, though – our team have been drawing on all of their first-hand experience and travel expertise to put together a quick and easy guide on how to make the most of your time in the bush. Covering everything from suitcase essentials to the best times of year for animal-spotting, here are five tips that are sure to make your next safari escape even more special.

What to pack

Before you've even arrived at your safari destination, the contents of your suitcase can make or break your experience. It’s important when packing to plan for any occasion with temperatures dropping overnight and climbing high again at midday. Other worthwhile parts of any safari kit include high-quality bug spray and sun protection.

If you’re heading to wetter areas such as Botswana’s Chobe River or grand Victoria Falls, waterproof clothing is certainly recommended. You’ll also be spending plenty of time out on game drives under the African sun, so be sure to pack adequate sun protection, including sun cream and sunglasses, to keep yourself covered! Finally, bringing a healthy amount of local currency is recommended for curio shopping and customary gratuity throughout your stay – make sure not to forget your binoculars, too!

What to wear

Moving onto your safari wardrobe, you’ll need a range of versatile neutral-coloured clothing, which can be changed to suit the day’s activities. Packing a pair of airy cargo trousers is a handy option for activities across the board – sealable pockets to protect your valuables, and elasticated ankles are a welcome bonus. Sturdy, closed-top footwear should also always be worn while in the bush. Finally, as a general rule, it’s a good idea to dress in a number of lighter layers which can be easily adjusted to keep you comfortable as the temperatures change. If you’re likely to be out under the open skies for the day, it’s a good idea to bring a good sun hat along with you as well.

When to go

While you’re likely to find spectacular wildlife all year round, it’s worth considering that the different seasons will change your safari experience in dramatic and interesting ways. A tour of Tanzania and the Serengeti, for instance, is stunning across all seasons but comes alive from June to November as the Great Migration takes centre stage. It’s also important to note that you’ll be more likely to spot certain animals at different times of day with caracals, bush babies and hyenas only descending on the reserves at nightfall.

How to make the most of your experience

To get the most out of your safari, one of the most important things you can bring with you is an open mind. Whether you’re chatting to your guide on the daily game drives or trying a few local foods and customs, approaching the experience with the right attitude will help to take your holiday up another notch. Most importantly, relax and enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime getaway.

How to spend your downtime

With relaxation in mind, one of the most important tips for a successful safari is to look after yourself. Whether you’re tackling a gentle self-guided trail through the bush or soaking up the sun by the poolside, make sure you take plenty of leisure time to recharge in between your wildlife experiences. With stops at a range of luxury lodges and resorts, from South Africa’s Cape Winelands to vibrant Mombasa, there are plenty of options to make the most of your downtime. Why not compliment your stay with an optional excursion for visits to conservation areas or time spent at a local village?
